A symmetry score out of ten is not a percentage of physical symmetry. Compare photos taken under similar conditions; this model has no published, independently validated accuracy rate for measuring facial asymmetry.

Symmetry scores in our analysis sample

Across 17,032 submitted-photo analyses, the model's mean symmetry score is 5.62/10. The table describes these analyses, including possible repeat submissions. It is not a population benchmark.

    Symmetry scoreShare of analyses
    Below 4.54.9%
    4.5 – 5.441%
    5.5 – 6.430.6%
    6.5 – 7.416.8%
    7.5 – 8.44.4%
    8.5 +2.3%

In this sample, 3.3% of analyses score 8 or above, and 11% score below 5. These figures describe model output, not the prevalence of physical asymmetry.

Figures use analyses from January 2026 onward (n=17,032), after the Dec 2025 model recalibration. Earlier analyses used a different scale.

How symmetry and overall model scores relate

Of everything the model measures, symmetry tracks the overall rating most closely: 0.95 across 17,032 analyses. The separation between groups is stark. Analyses rated 8 or above average 8.54 on symmetry. Analyses rated under 5 average 4.74. Nearly four points apart on the same ten-point scale.

Golden-ratio scores correlate with the overall rating at 0.67in the same dataset. These are associations between outputs of one model. They do not prove that either score predicts human judgments or that changing symmetry causes a change in attractiveness.

Taking a photo for a symmetry estimate

A turned head can make one side appear narrower, while side lighting can hide details. Use consistent photo conditions to make comparisons easier. Our AI score is a visual estimate; it is not calculated from calibrated landmark measurements.

    • Square to the camera. Keep both sides of your face visible.
    • Camera at eye level. Shooting from above or below tilts the facial plane and skews the halves.
    • Even, frontal light. Side lighting darkens one half and can be read as a structural difference.
    • Neutral expression. Expression can change the visible balance of your face.
    • Compare conditions. A score difference between photos can reflect lighting, pose or model variation.

    Frequently asked questions

How does the face symmetry checker work?

Upload a straight-on photo for an AI estimate of apparent left-right balance. The free result is a score out of ten, not a geometric measurement or a percentage of facial symmetry.

How symmetrical is the average face?

The average model score in our sample of 17,032 analyses is 5.62/10. This is a self-selected sample of submitted photos, which can include repeat analyses. It does not establish an average for the population.

    Does facial symmetry affect attractiveness?

Our model symmetry score correlates with its overall rating at 0.95 in this dataset. Both scores come from the same model, so the association does not independently validate either score or measure how other people perceive a face.

What is a good face symmetry score?

A score above 5.62 is above the mean in this particular sample. There is no universal cutoff for a good result. Photo conditions and model variation can change the score.

Is the face symmetry test free?

You can start a free scan without signing up, within your available allowance. Your overall rating, basic face shape and symmetry estimate are included. Additional feature scores and written recommendations require full report access.

Why do two photos give different symmetry scores?

Head position, camera distance, lighting and expression change the visible balance of a photo. AI estimates can also vary. Use similar photo conditions when comparing results; a change in score alone does not demonstrate a change in your face.
